Happy Birthday SpaceCraft!

I stopped by SpaceCraft Studios this afternoon to celebrate their one year anniversary (it goes until 6 if you haven't been yet). Congrats Allison and SpaceCraft on a great year and a great party!

Runaround Sue Vintage has a nice supply of vintage clothing on hand, plus buttons made from vintage images you can pick up - or make some yourself.

A handful of kids were making goodies, while adults perused the DIY bar.

So stop by if you haven't yet - do a little shopping, crafting, and drinking!

If you can't make it today, check out one of their upcoming classes and come by when you can.

SpaceCraft turns 1!

They've taught you to sew, make a wallet from duct tape, transfer photos to almost anything, ombre dye a perfect picnic blanket, photograph your work, and more ... and now they're turning 1! If you've yet to check out SpaceCraft Studios, a party might be the perfect introduction.

Stop by on Saturday, August 24th between 11:00am and 5:30pm. You can meet the owner, Allison Merrick, grab a snack, and make a thing or two.

Runaround Sue Vintage Boutique will be hosting a pop up shop and Camela Guevara, their on-site seamstress, will help you refashion your new old clothes.

SpaceCraft is a great addition to our city - go by and show your support! Sign up to learn something new, bring a bottle of wine and have the most productive happy hour in town. Book a girlfriend's baby shower and create custom designed onesies. Plan a bridal shower and help the bride create a one of a kind photo booth backdrop. Allison has all the supplies you need to host a great event.

So, recap:

Learn How to Photograph Your Work

When applying for markets, you're not judged on your work - you're judged on what your work looks like. Selection committees can't feel the quality of your paper, the heaviness of your fabric, the sturdiness of the clasp on your necklaces. The same goes with selling your goods online; potential buyers can't touch anything. So you need to represent yourself in the best light (pun intended).

SpaceCraft Studios is now offering classes to help you present your goods in the best way. On August 10th, Jeni Rone of Sea Star Arts will spend 3 hours teaching you the basics of product photography. Here's what she'll be covering:

Because a potential buyer cannot touch, squeeze and pull on your work of art, we need to photograph our products to create an "experience" on the screen. Working with natural light, simple props and all the buttons your camera has, we will review the basics of photography and how to capture the soul of your image to share with your customer.

Curriculum will include:
  • Proper Set Up and Product Evaluation
  • How does my camera work?
  • Creating that WOW image along with the follow up images to continue the story
  • Editing Tips
  • Demo of actual Product Shoot
Class Requirements: Camera (Digital Preferred - iPhone's Accepted!) and an open mind to think out of the box!

As always, you're encouraged to BYOB. Although for this class, maybe you should bring your own snack and skip the booze. You're going to want to pay close attention.

Mark your calendar for May 11th - CHS Etsy Craft Night!

Alright, local Etsy shop owners - it's time to get crafty with your fellow artists. So mark your calendars for May 11th, and participate in the Charleston Area Etsy Craft Night.
The meeting will be at SpaceCraft Studios (West Ashley). According to City Paper, "it’ll be geared toward local Etsy artisans or folks who might need guidance on how to turn a hobby or skill into a business. They’ll also offer a few brief demonstrations on skill sets for marketing, including how to take great product photographs."
This is a great chance to take your store to the next level, and get some great advice while networking with your peers.

Late Night/Date Night at SpaceCraft Studios

I convinced the husband to join me and my friend, Angela for a night at SpaceCraft Studios. We took the photo transfer techniques class, where we learned to transfer photos to wood, glass, plastic, tape ... basically anything. Heather Powers was an amazing teacher.

All you need is a photo, a surface, and some Modge Podge. Here's how it went:

If you're transferring to wood, you need to sand down the surface. Then you add Modge Podge to your photo (front of photo), and place it on the wood. Smooth out the bubbles, and wait.

Side note: SpaceCraft is BYOB. Hello Tecate.

After 15 minutes (and the help of a hair dryer), we began removing the paper. You just spritz the back of the photo with water and gently peel the paper off with your fingers. GENTLY, being the key word there.

One more layer of Modge Podge and that's it!

Check out these great classes coming to SpaceCraft soon!

Get Crafty at the Artist Market with SpaceCraft Studios

SpaceCraft Studios will be joining us at the December 8th Lowcountry Artist Market! You guys may remember my adventure in linocut printing there. Well, SpaceCraft is bringing the craft to you.
On December 8th, you'll have two crafting options set up in the large balcony at the Music Farm. You can make either:
1" buttons

Gift tags

For only $5, participants can make three custom 1" pinback buttons using vintage, festive, and scrapbooking papers, or create some gift tags using our punches, papers, string, glue dots, notions and more.
If you're not that creative, don't worry - SpaceCraft will sell hand-printed gift wrap and divine twine, and have samples of wrapped items to provide inspiration. Don't miss this opportunity to add even more DIY feel to your locally handmade Christmas gifts this year!
