City Paper's Best of Charleston

Prepare yourself for the shameless and blatant self promotion that is to follow.  It's time for Charleston City Paper's Best Of Charleston 2012 and of course, I would love for you to vote for the Artist Market - and some of your favorite vendors.

So, please vote Lowcountry Artist Market as the Best Gift Shop in Charleston.  Now I know that's not exactly what the market is, but it's also not a festival or an outdoor event.  Or a boutique.  But it's got a hint of each.  And after thinking about what my favorite Gift Shop in Charleston would be, I realized I buy a good amount of gifts either on Etsy or at the Market.  So, if you decide to vote, please vote Lowcountry Artist Market!

Other categories that deserve your attention:

Local Clothing Designer

Vintage Clothing Store

Local Jewelry Designer
And of course, since they graciously let us take over their space for the Market, the Music Farm gets our vote for Best Rock Music Club.  Also, Lauryn Hill, Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Big Gigantic, Methodman, Fitz & the Tantrums, Dr. Dog, Ryan Bingham, Josh Ritter, Switchfoot, Minus the Bear, TV on the Radio and countless others played there this year.  2011 was none too shabby at the Farm.

Feel free to post your favorite vendors in the comments.  I'm sure they'd appreciate the support (and the vote)!

Stalking. Via etsy, of course.

With a little time to kill, I decided to shop local via Etsy.com this morning.  And how did I miss some of these vendors?  They aren't necessarily new to Etsy - just new to me.  Check them out!

Tomato Planter Christmas Trees

I've been tempted to buy the prefab guys, like these, but $40+ just seemed too expensive.  Thank goodness for the internet.  Pinterest, specifically.  I found this easy (read: cheap and easy) solution.

If you can't tell - that's just an upside down tomato cage and a ton of lights.

42" Tomato Cage - $2.57
3 sets 100 Lights - $2.68x3

Total:  $10.61

Made one for each side of the door.  Not too shabby.

Testing the lights first, of course.

The only part that had any real planning was wrapping the bottom layer.  Just threaded the lights around the bottom loop.

Then diagonally up and down the "tree" until it looked full.  These pictures are with 1 strand of 150 lights, but I ended up adding more for the final picture - 300 lights total.

I thought I would need florist wire to secure the top, but the lights did it for me.  Just wrapped them around each other to tighten up the top.

That's all there is to it.  My Mom actually made one as well - but wrapped it with greenery first and it looks great.  This is an easy project to make your own.

One step closer to being ready for Christmas!

Seek Vintage

A twenty-something with a borderline obsessive love of all things vintage. Loves seeking out treasure among trash. If you're looking for something specific, I might be able to find it for you.

Jess Ann Jewelry

I, Jess Ann Smith, am a jewelry artist and designer.  I create jewelscapes inspired by
nature, color and light.
I am a dreamer. I tread gently on our earth.  I love laughter.  Always a beachcomber.  I crave the outdoors.  Iam always learning.  I love to listen.  I try to be compassionate.  My daughter is my masterpiece.  What else is there...breathe.

I am a stay-at-home mom of two little girls, Bean and Bug, living in Charleston, SC. My grandmother taught me to knit as a little girl and I have always loved the hobby. As my friends started having children, I began knitting baby clothes as gifts. Then I became a mom myself and was able to knit for my own girls. I have often been told that I should sell my knitting, so here it goes.

Bird Flower Creations featured on Charlie!

Congrats Caleigh!  What a great article from Charlie Magazine.

Sock Monster

Monsters under the bed no more.

Charleston artist CaleighBird’s sock monsters have been appearing in some fashionable places lately like JLinSnider, Barsa and Jail Break 2. The irresistibly soft and cuddly handmade monsters are as funky, unique and lovable as something out of Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.”

And guess what happens when you twist socks together just so? They take on personalities.

“Dennis is actually a very gifted chef. He spent a few months in Toulouse, France last year and has been showing off his talent ever since!” Samuel, a blue guy with tired eyes and sporting only a tie, “is a bit of a busy body, preferring to stay late at the office to number crunch, and he is completely addicted to coffee. He does however, know how to have fun, especially during out of town office team-building exercises.” These are the fanciful and hilarious descriptions given to the monsters for sale on Bird’s etsy site.

Looking through a big monster pile, Caleigh grabs one, Ingle, a smallish white guy with a ring on his head, and says offhandedly, “He’s super phallic, accidentally.”

The naming process is particularly fun for Caleigh, who finishes sewing the monster before deciding on a name to match its personality. Often people are attracted to her monsters because of their names. She was helping a customer pick two out and suggested Pepper and Tipper saying, “they are totally androgynous.” Two of her favorites, Posey and Camille, who almost look like twins, were sold to a mother with twins. Like owner, like monster.

Caleigh only lets herself keep one monster, Judith, admitting, “I get really attached. I’d probably have a room full of them otherwise.”

Making monsters is the latest focus of Caleigh’s artistic pursuits, which stem from her passion for oil painting, often of hands and feet. Human parts.

These unique hand-crafted objects won’t break the bank but might melt your heart. With accessories like scarves, bikinis, bow ties and aprons, their signature plump lips, and some sporting a long tongue, buck teeth or fangs, you are sure to find one that speaks to you. Or to someone else. ‘Tis the season, after all. The season for monsters.
